SkyWake Invasion by Jamie Russell

Big Book Award 2022 shortlister:

An exciting and original debut sci-fi adventure trilogy for the gaming generation, from a screenwriter, film critic and gamer.

Fifteen-year-old girl gamer Casey Henderson is obsessed with smash-hit game SkyWake – and she’s good at it, too. Little does she realize it’s actually an alien training tool created by an evil extra-terrestrial race. When the aliens swoop down on a national gaming tournament, Casey and her teammates discover they’re abducting the best gamers to fight in a distant alien war across the galaxy. And they’ve got her brother. Casey’s gaming skills are her best hope of stopping the aliens – but first she and her online teammates must learn to work together in real life…

About the author & illustrator

When Jamie was five he saw a Space Invaders arcade machine in a greasy fish and chip shop at the seaside. It blew his mind and started a lifelong love of videogames.   When he grew up, he became a film critic for the BBC and a contributing editor for Total Film magazine. He was sent to special movie screenings and fed free sandwiches.  He thought it was the best job ever. But he was wrong…  Later he wrote for videogame bible Edge magazine and realised that it was possible to get paid for shooting virtual aliens in the face with shotguns. He is the author of several non-fiction books for grown-ups (including one on zombie cinema and another on Hollywood & videogames) as well as a trio of short films that have played at film festivals around the world. His first feature film is out soon.  He lives in Shropshire with his wife, two daughters and one crazy rescue dog. When he’s not writing, he works as a climate activist.  He still loves videogames, especially Overwatch where he plays as a Mercy main because healing other people is way more fun than shooting them.

This book is really fun but also quite confusing as Casey is lying about who she is and making poor Pete pretend to be her. I think Casey has put too much pressure on Pete and should apologise to him as soon as she can. But also I’m quite happy that she decided to step back into the game where she is supposed to be and is now winning the game for her team. Also she 100% needs to apologise to her team as well because she didn’t just lie about Pete being her she also lied about her identity and gender by saying she was a boy so she really needs to apologise to both her team and Pete.

SkyWake is a brilliant book with thrilling moments. I would definitely recommend this to year 5 and 6. One of my favourite parts was when Casey attacked Scratch.

SkyWake is my favourite book because it has so much good vocabulary and it is very intense. It is so far on of the best books out of 5 that I have read and I love reading it and I love to read in class and at home. I love the bit that when the clan thinks that Pete, Casey’s brother, is her because they think she’s a girl so Pete has to play.

This book is one in a million its full of action and tension never knowing what or when its going to happen. The also beautiful part of this story is expressing the part of girls playing games and also being one of the best, so it is not showing that boys are the best at games online. It also addressed people believe if people play games they are boys which is a bit of sexism in the games community. It its also a great book because it is full of tension with the aliens with real guns making your heart pound like a drum and Casey having to protect her brotherlike she promised to her dad. I also love the action of this book with all the plasma rifles firing all around. This book is amazing thank you.

I REALLY, REALLY enjoyed SkyWake because it was definitely action-packed. Also, I loved the outstanding imagery (it feels as if you are there alongside all of the characters ) and the jokes in the story were extremely funny. The gaming theme also engaged me even more because I like gaming as well. Another reason why I liked it was because it addressed sexism in the gaming culture and also how much it can change somebody and also how much it can affect them. Later on, in the story it changed so that they all felt equal and got along which I was glad to read. I appreciate that the description was exquisite and that the author put a lot of time and effort into it. THANK YOU JAMIE RUSSELL!!!!!!! Can’t wait for the sequel!

I think SkyWake was marvellous and exquisite. What was impeccable was that it felt like I was in the story but it didn’t have any pictures in it. I enjoyed how it came to life and made me felt excited. It taught me that everyone can play video games even if you are good or bad at them.

SkyWake is an incredible action packed book. I love all the characters especially Casey; the description was immaculate and I was so engrossed. I read it all the time. Casey was so relatable and great. Her team supported her and it show that girls and boys can do anything they want if they put there mind to it. Even though it ended on a cliff hanger it set it up perfectly for a sequel and even though I haven’t read it I’m sure it will be just as good as the first SkyWake.

I enjoyed this book because of all the adventure, funniness and aliens and alien technology, languages and weaponry, my favourite character is Cheeze because he’s a hacker and my favourite part was when he stole scratches armour to get in the spaceship.Over all, Jamie Russell did a very good job.
