2014 Book Award Shortlist

‘Skull in the Wood’ by Sandra Greaves

About the book:

Desperate to get away from his mum and her boyfriend, Paul, ‘the four-eyed pillock’, Matt arranges to leave London and spend half term with his Uncle Jack, and his cousins Tilda and Kitty on their farm in the wilds of Dartmoor.

However, he quickly realises that he might have made a very bad decision. Apart from Kitty, who is only five years old, he receives a very frosty reception from his relatives – especially Tilda – but he can’t understand why.

About the Author:

Born in Edinburgh, Sandra Greaves worked in journalism, TV and communications before becoming a copywriter (and also a prize-winning poet). She and her husband keep several badly-behaved chickens on a smallholding midway between the moor and the sea in Dartington, Devon.

This was a mesmerising, action packed tale including a huge amount of suspense and excitement. From the second I started I was hooked and couldn’t put it down until the very end. For this reason I highly recommend this to ages 8+ and rate it 10/10.

I was gripped by this book for the whole time I was reading it. It was a little bit scary but it was so brilliant too. I would definitely recomend this book to 7-10 year olds. Another good factor of this book is the description especially when they went into the wood it was mind blowing. 5 stars

I thought it was really good. Especially when they walked in to the woods, because the description was amazing. My friends also really liked it, they finished before me. If I was rating from 1-10 I would rate it 7. I finished it in 2 weeks.

I think that this book is a great book! I like how Tilda and Matt go of into the woods and find a skull. On the whole I think the book is full of adventure. I would rate this book 10/10 and would say it is for 9 years upwards.
