Moonflight by Gill Lewis

Big Book Award 2024 shortlister:

The seventh-born rat of the seventh-born litter is always a rat in want of adventure.

Tilbury is no exception.

He just doesn’t know it yet . . .

The curse of a legendary diamond hangs heavy over the Dockland Rats – and it becomes clear only Tilbury can break the curse and save ratkind from disaster. To carry out his destiny, this timid young rat must leave the comfort of home for the very first time . . .

Tilbury’s quest takes him to new lands, where huge cats and unfamiliar rats rule the streets and skies. Tilbury must risk everything to return the cursed jewel to its rightful owner. . . and along the way, he just might discover what true treasure is.

About the author

Gill has adored animals for as long as she can remember. From building a mini hospital for insects in her garden as a child, to working as a vet in the wilds of Africa, her life has been full of fascinating wildlife adventures.

Gill lives in Somerset with her family and their pets, which include dogs, chickens, and a rescued Shetland pony. She dreams up stories in her treehouse, surrounded by squirrels and plates of biscuits.

Gill’s previous titles include Sky Hawk, White Dolphin, Sky Dancer and The Closest Thing to Flying, and have won and been shortlisted for numerous awards. A Street Dog Named Pup is the first book that she has also illustrated herself.

The best book in the short-list, 1 million/10. But that is my opinion. I really hoped that Obsidian would not turn bad.

Moonflight is AMAZING. It has such a great story but some challenging language. It was very unpredictable, a lot happens and is perfect for a reader like me, who enjoys adventure and dark fantasy. For me it is a 10/10 but I understand others may struggle with it, so I shall give it a 9/10.

It is a great adventure and I would recommend it to people who like lots of action, twist and turns. Don’t be put of by the size of the book, it is amazing. 10/10.

Personally this is not my kind of book it bored me and it didn’t make sense at all. But this might be a book for someone else with a different personality to me. A book that I would love you to write is a diary book like ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ or ‘Lottie Brooks’. Personally I didn’t enjoy reading this at all but other people might like this, I just didn’t fancy it.

Moon Flight is about RATS, ratlings Tilbury and Nimble-Quick are heroes, whereas Bartholomew is an interesting character. I think the fabled Cursed Night is what is says on the tin…a curse! I am currently on page 200, so I don’t know how it ends, but I don’t think the curse will be lifted. I would rate it 10/10 but if I could I would give it 9,999,999/10! Happy reading my fellow Dockland Rats 😉

Tilbury has a curious mind but he did not know what lay a head of him from sea shanties to two headed beasts. This little rattling has a big adventure, and someone close to him experiences death’s slippery grasp. It’s full of sadness and curses. I liked this novel if I could give this book over 10/10 I would give 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000/10

                      • I really liked the storyline because the sides kept turning (ie twists and turns in the plot).
                      • The characters seemed believable – I can imagine rats like that.
                      • I think Tilbury took the role of a weak boy with a big destiny.
                      • I think it was a really good adventure book.
                      • It excited me because it was a mystery/adventure.
                      • It was fantastic.
                      • I would recommend this book because [the characters] find lots of different mysteries and challenges to face.
                      • I would recommend this book to anyone really from 8-12 years.
                      • I would recommend this book to just about anyone.
