Lost on Gibbon Island by Jess Butterworth

WINNER – Big Book Award 2024:

The Last Bear meets The Life of Pi in this adventure-filled survival story set on a lush Cambodian island! Meet 12-year-old Lark, who finds herself shipwrecked with no one but a baby gibbon for company. Can she survive storms, lack of food and jelly-fish infested waters and find her way home?

‘If you’re reading this, hopefully you’ve come to rescue me. My name is Lark Taylor, and I’ve been shipwrecked on an island. The last mainland I was on was Cambodia, miles and miles away from home…’

When Lark’s mum takes her family with her on a research trip to Cambodia, Lark never expects that she’ll end up stranded on a deserted island! But that’s exactly what happens when her boat is shipwrecked.

With her only companion a baby gibbon, Lark faces many dangers – brutal storms, scorching sunshine and jellyfish-infested waters. And with dwindling food and water, she must make a plan to find her way off the island before it’s too late…

This book is a good book but it gets you not liking it a lot when you want to find out about how they get stranded and they don’t talk about the jelly fish a lot and it goes straight into a part when they don’t give enough descriptions about something else but it is a good book.

I have read about 130 pages of this book and so far it is very good. The gibbon sounds very cute. I think I would give this and 8/10 because it is very slow and not a lot happens.

This book was perhaps a little too long for me. I thought it was very intriguing because it was based on real events. I found it to be quite inspiring.
Until I got up to about page 100, I found it rather hard to get into, but after that it got going and was an exciting adventure.

This book was very detailed and I loved the storyline. I think that Jess was very clever to think of such a good plot but I also think that Rob did a very good job with the illustrations. This is one of my favourite books out of all of them. I will definitely be putting votes on this book.

Lost on Gibbon Island is a SPECTACULAR! I very much enjoyed this book, the style in which it is written is very cool. I am pretty sure that it is my favourite book out of the 4 I have read so far.

An amazing book, I love how it is in the style of a diary, and once I started I couldn’t put it down. It went a bit slowly although I still give it 9/10.

I think that the author must be very talented to write abook this detailed. Personally, this has to be the best book out of the shortlist. I loved the plot and all of the characters, not forgetting Goldie the gibbon. 😉

This was our favourite book out of all 6. Really enjoyed the brief description and how you could picture the jungle with the incredible wildlife. We could definitely tell that the author, Jess Butterworth, had been through a similar experience because of the realism of the storyline and its perfect structure. We would give it a 9/10…incredible!
