2018 Book Award Shortlist

They Didn’t Teach THIS in Worm School! by Simone Lia

About the Book:

Marcus is a worm. He likes the colour brown. He likes mud (because it’s brown). And he likes digging holes in the mud-brown earth.  Strangely, he likes beat boxing, too. But when Marcus meets Laurence (a scruffy, fat bird who looks a lot like a chicken … and thinks he’s a flamingo!), he comes face to face with his worst fear. Will he get eaten for breakfast? It is a Very Bad Situation. Marcus has two choices: Survive, Or get slurped up like a piece of spaghetti. Mustering all his worm instincts, he finds himself striking up a conversation. It’s amazing how a simple “Good morning!” can end up saving your life… And so begins a tale of high adventure, wily tricks and unlikely friendship. Simone Lia has created a heartwarming comedy classic that will have readers wriggling with laughter.

As i am still reading the book i find it really interesting and, when Marcus needs Laurence he was there, like a proper friend would and he didn’t leave him. The book hooked me in straight away because of the beginning of it because of the trail it made me read it.

Reading this book made me feel really happy. At the beginning it made me laugh when Marcus said how much he liked brown.
Secondly, I really liked how Laurence and Marcus made friends along the way. My favourites were the “French” worms (who weren’t actually French) because they had a great plan to help Marcus find Laurence.

WOW what an AMAZING book!! A talking worm that befriends a talking pigeon- or is he a flamingo? This book inspired me (a person who didn’t really like reading) to start reading and to enjoy books and when I started, I found out that I like reading. I found this book funny how Laurence thought he was a flamingo and Marcus played along with it and didn’t say anything. Then further in the book Marcus sticks up for Laurence when they meet a group of flamingos that laugh at him when he says that he’s one of them. This book inspired me to read so i am sure it will for you to. I think that Simone Lia deserves a massive around of applause for being a great author and creating a fun, imaginitive book.

I enjoyed reading ‘They didn’t teach this at worm school’ because it was wonderfully surreal. Part of the reason I enjoyed this book so much is the fact that there are so many jokes that are real misunderstandings among 4 and 5 year-old children. This is nice because I used to think that electricity pylons were Eiffel Towers! I recommend this books for readers with a lively sense of humour and enjoys simply funny stories.

I really enjoyed this book. I think it is great for people who aren’t very enthusiastic with reading and will make them turn the page with excitement. It is filled to the brim with humour and delusional chickens. My favourite bit is when Marcus and Laurence find ‘The Eiffel Tower’. I would recommend this book to all ages as it is simple enough for young children but interesting and funny enough for older children.

I liked it when they thought they were in Kenya, but they were in a zoo. I thought it was different than other books because you never see a worm getting along with a bird.

They Didn’t Teach This In Worm School…
They didn’t teach this in Worm School is quite a kid-like book . Its quite funny because Laurence thinks hes a flamingo but he looks more like chicken, so he try’s to travel to lake Nakuru but on the way there they think they saw the Eiffel Tower but its just a power station ! If I was able to rate it I would give 8/10 stars.

They Didn’t Teach This in Worm School Review
This book is funny and adventurous. It is based on a fat chicken who thinks he’s a flamingo and, a worm called Marcus. Together they journey disastrously around what they think is Lake Nakuru in Kenya! They then realise they are only about 3 miles from home! Altogether, I think it is utterly hilarious and, though not particularly hard to read, is great fun.

If you like humour, nonsense and downright oddness (in a good way) in a book you will love They Didn’t Teach This in Worm School. It has a fat chicken who thinks he’s a flamingo, a worm and a lot of mashed potato! It is hilarious and, if I was to rate it, I would give it 10 out of 10.

They didn’t teach this at worm school

This hilarious story is about a worm called Marcus and a bird, who looks like a chicken, called Laurence. What’s strange about Laurence is that she thinks she is a flamingo! This unusual friendship goes on an adventure to Kenya- South Africa- or so they think. Along their crazy journey they join a beat-boxing group who try to sabotage their lives. One of the funniest parts was when Marcus and Laurence think that they are in Paris because of the pylons that look like the Eiffel Tower. But will they get to Kenya or will they end up in the middle of nowhere? If you want to find out read this fabulous book…

They didn’t teach this at worm school

Marcus is a worm, Laurence is a bird who looks like a chicken and thinks he’s a flamingo! Laurence has a dream of going to Lake Nakaru in Kenya to meet his “flamingo” relatives. When Laurence meets Marcus, things go wrong and Laurence wants to eat him for his breakfast however, Marcus doesn’t want to let that happen so they become friends. They try and get to Kenya with Marcus as the navigator but things go terribly wrong… Will they ever get back home?
“They didn’t teach this at worm school” is a joyful and humorous read and I think everyone will love it! It is easy read, it isn’t too long and there are funny pictures too.

I think They Didn’t Teach THIS In Worm School is a brilliant book about a small worm called Marcus and his chicken-like friend Laurence. Marcus and Laurence go on a journey to Kenya because Laurence thinks he’s a flamingo and wants to join his supposed kin. Together, meeting new friends along the way, a worm and a bird go on a heartfelt adventure to find home. My favourite part was when Marcus flew over a row of ‘Eiffel Towers’. I liked this book but I thought there were a bit too many pictures. I’d give 4.5/5 for this hilarious story. Well done Simone Lia!

They didn’t teach THIS at worm is a humorous and adventurous book about a small worm called Marcus and a large bird called Laurence. It is about Marcus trying not to end up on Laurence’s plate. They try to go on an adventure to Lake Nukuru in South Africa. It is a book about making friends and thinking outside of the box. I think it is a gripping book which will leave its readers squirming with laughter. It is a well written book with funny illustrations which help to make this book a great read.

I think this book is very funny and its about a tale of survival for a worm(called Marcus)who comes face to face with a scruffy looking bird called Laurence(who thinks he’s a flamingo!)They set off on a adventure to try and find Lake Nakuru, because that’s where Laurence thinks he belongs. Marcus had two choices, either to survive or to be eaten for breakfast. It’s not my favorite book, but I really liked reading it.I would recommend this book to anyone who likes humour and an adventure.

I like the book (They didn’t teach this in worm school) because it has lots of humour in it, like packing a toilet and thinking pylons are Eiffel towers! I like the fact that the bird(Laurence)and the worm(Marcus)were friends. This is a story of survival. The worm is brave and teaches the bird new things, because he had two options, either to survive or to be slurped up like a piece of spaghetti!

I enjoyed they didn’t teach this at worm school because i loved the humour and hilarious jokes. I think it has a catchy title which drew me in from the start. I was a little apprehensive when i first opened the book as i thought it was suited for younger pupils, but then i gave it a chance and found it a thriller-7/10.

The book ” They didn’t teach this at worm school” is the most hilarious and amusing book i have ever read. It is about a worm called Marcus and a chicken called Laurence they are best friends. I couldn’t stop laughing when i was reading this book i thought i was going to cry i was laughing that much. My favorite part was when Laurence thought he was a flamingo and when they thought some electric poles were the Eiffel Towers that was the most funnies part in the book. I would rate this book 5\5 stars.

They didn’t teach this in worm school is a good book for people starting to read. It could be improved by putting more information in it . I would recommend it to people who like small adventure books and don’t like big long books. My favorite bit where Laurence thinks he is a flamingo and they have to go on long adventures.

The friendship that bonds between the worm and chicken is amazing. The friendship that bonds between Marcus and Laurence was in the story all a long but the just had to find it.

The book ‘They didn’t teach THIS in worm school!’ is a very adventurous and funny book about a worm and a supposedly “flamingo” (who looks more like a chicken, Laurence) goes on an adventure to try and get to Kenya in Africa. They meet a lot of animals (and insects) and face a lot of challenges (and dancing). I would highly recommend this to animal lovers and people who enjoy going on adventures!

Well what an unusual read! A talking worm befriends a ‘chicken’ – or is he a flamingo – and they embark on a journey together to Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya. Not a story plot I have ever encountered before! Along the way, they meet lots of interesting characters, get in and out of several scrapes and form an animal beatboxing band! This book has laugh-out-loud moments and you will certainly not be able to predict what happens when you turn the page. An inventive, bizarre and unconventional book, accessible to everyone.
