About the author & illustrator:
Jo Simmons began her working life as a journalist. Her first fiction series for children, Pip Street, was inspired by her own kids’ love of funny fiction,
and two Super Loud Sam books followed. My Parents Cancelled My Birthday is Jo’s third book for Bloomsbury. In addition to children’s fiction, she has also co-written a humorous parenting book, Can I Give Them Back Now?: The Aargh To Zzzz of Parenting, published by Square Peg. Jo lives in Brighton with her husband, two boys and a scruffy formerly Romanian street dog.
Nathan Reed has been a professional illustrator since graduating from Falmouth College of Arts in 2000. He was shortlisted for the Serco Prize for Illustration in 2014. When he’s not illustrating he can be found with his two boys and a football on Peckham Rye Common.

Wow, this book is amazing, because…. it all started with a pig on a roof!
I like this book because it made me chuckle a little bit. It made me chuckle when the pig fell off the roof.
I loved the part when the pig fell off the roof it made me giggle a bit!
This book was really enjoyable because of how many things were going on and I liked the fact that they were fighting chickens at the party.
I really liked My Parents Cancelled My Birthday because it made me giggle a lot and I really like the bit where his friend turns into a little princess and where the pig falls of the roof.

This is the funniest book that I read in all the Bookfest’s books, especially when the pig falls off the roof. And my favourite character is Tom, because when different things happened he has different feelings and all his feelings are very funny!

I loved My Parents Cancelled My Birthday, but I didn’t like when it talked about the dead animals, especially when the chihuahua got squashed.
I enjoyed ‘My Parents Cancelled My Birthday’ because it was very humorous and I think and the story was written very well. My favourite part was when the pig fell off the roof because it introduced it very well. Also the characters were different to all the other books. Overall a great book.
I like this book and I would definitely recommend it to people who enjoy comedy. My favourite part is when Tiny jumps off the garage and flattens Margharita (Gran’s chihuahua) and Tom thinks fast and hides the flattened dog in a pizza box and then buries it in Bright Futures Nursery sandpit.

I like my Parents Cancelled My Birthday because it is very funny when Tiny falls off the roof onto Margherita. With Tom’s great thinking he gets a pizza box to put Margherita in. Then he put it into a sand box – that I thought was a very weird idea. I would recommend this book to people who like laughter and fun. I would rate this book a 10/10 because it kept me on the edge of my seat. My favourite character is Tiny because she is not tiny any more she is big. Personally I think that is funny and strange.
This is a brilliant book, because all of the events that take place; such as the pig called Tiny and how he squashes Margarita falling from the garage roof. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves humour and is looking for and easy read; this book is definitely a 10/10.
This book is phenomenal. This book is funny, silly and out of this world. My favourite part in this book is when Nan thinks Margarita is still alive and puts dog treats down on the floor.
This is a brilliant book. It is funny quirky, silly. My favourite part was when Tiny flattened Margarita then George hides her in a pizza box and buried it in a sand pit – how ironic that Margarita ended up in a pizza box. I was surprised when George’s grandma decides to call a chicken Caesar.
I liked this book because it is very funny and is full of problems. My favourite character is Tiny because she is called Tiny, but she is massive. My favourite part of the book is when Tiny jumped off the roof and flattened Gran’s dog, Margarita, so Tom had to think fast he put Margarita in a pizza box. I recommend this book to everybody that likes a funny book or an easy book to read.
I enjoyed My Parents Cancelled My Birthday because it set off a range of emotions. I would give it a three star rating not quite five star material because I didn’t understand the plot of the story, When I read the title I thought it was a sad story but it was actually a funny story, I enjoyed the book because it causes a range of emotions i would give it a 3 star rating because i don’t think its quite 5 star rating because i did not understand the plot of the story my favourite character is Tiny the pig who squashed Margherita the tiny dog.expected it to be a sad story but when i actually read the book it was just funny. This is a funny story but I didn’t understand if there was a message in the story, if there was what was it? In the film a pig falls of a roof onto a tiny dog and kills it that is not believable because pigs shouldn’t be on roofs and if it landed on a dog it normally wouldn’t kill it.
Joe’s parents have cancelled his birthday, but he thinks about resilience and gets it back on the line, read the book to see how. This is one of the funniest books I have ever read with Tiny the pig falling of the roof and Meg on about the tooth fairy curse. My favourite character is probably Harry who acts as the tooth fairy. My favourite scene was either Tiny falling of the roof squashing Margarita or the fire breaking out in their house. I recommend this book to children who are 7-8 years old and 4.75 stars. I would recommend this book to people who like funny story lines. .
Tom is furious that his parents cancelled his lucky birthday but is determined to get it back. I liked this book because it is very funny. My favourite character is Meg she does strange things to save her from the tooth fairy curse. My favourite part of the book is when tiny {who, is huge} falls of the roof and squashed granny’s dog Margarita.
I thoroughly enjoyed My Parents Cancelled My Birthday – it was funny. My favourite part of the comedy was that every time things looked good something very bad happened, I would recommend this book for younger ages I would say about year 3-4 its silly funny and has lots of bad luck. This book is a comedy. The story is about a troubled family who can’t have time for a silly birthday let alone staying together as a family. So how will Tom and his friends save his lucky birthday and bring his family together?
This probably the funniest book out of the lot, George is devastated when his parents cancel his birthday but George is determined to go on!

I thought this book was very funny, my favourite part was Tom’s birthday party, Tom’s dad asked them if they wanted pizza but it wasn’t pizza it was a flat dog!
This book really entertained me. It made me laugh a lot. I like the idea that it’s from the boy’s point of view and it’s almost as if he’s talking. It also had some interesting characters.

My Parents Cancelled My Birthday by Jo Simmons is really good because it describes how the little boy is feeling about his parents cancelling his birthday and he was really excited about it but the pig had messed it all up. I also recommend this book because it will surprise you at the end of the most detailed story I’ve read. Plus you should read and read it until you have finished it.
My Parents Cancelled My Birthday is the funniest book I have read so far. The whole book will make you laugh it was quite sad in the middle bit but it gets all fine it just gets funnier as you read. The author and illustrator Nathan Reed has put so much detail in to his illustrations and Jo Simmons wrote it nicely but my favourite bit is the middle because it’s very intense. And it gets you hooked and you cant take your eyes of it. The author Jo Simmons put some made up words in there but apart from that it is a great book please read this book it’s great this is a book to read.

I really do believe that this book will go far and lots of little kids will enjoy it. This book is also very good for calming you down if you’re stressed, worried about something and if you can’t go to sleep. My Parents Cancelled My Birthday is a very funny book it is also very interesting. When I was reading it made me laugh a lot. The main character Tom was very funny and I would love to read more of the author’s books. It was one of my first 2020 Bookfest book and i would love to read it again sometime soon. The characters are all unique [Tom,mum,dad,grandma,dog,pig,his sister,chickens,Chase and his other friends]. When I saw the cover of the book it made me want to read it. The ending of the story was very lovely and I would very much recommend this book if you are a person who loves adventure, comedy and drama.

This book was really funny from the beginning to the end. I really liked how the boy still tried to redo his birthday! I liked how all the animals were included.It was lots of fun to read and I really loved the pictures! I would recommend this book to people who like to laugh while reading. A lot happens in the book so you don’t get bored halfway through and want to stop reading halfway through. Every character did something hilarious and the boy’s Nan really made me laugh! My Parents Cancelled My Birthday is a really fun read with interesting characters and a easy-to-understand plot. When I was reading I could really understand what the main character, Tom, was thinking, feeling and doing. I was really shocked when the dog, Margherita, got squashed and put in an old pizza box. Its kind of iconic that a dog called Margherita gets put into a Pizza box, of all things. Everybody in the book had a unique sense of humor that makes you smile. I really recommend it for people who feel like they need some cheering up- the understandable plot, a pig, parents, a grandma, chickens, a boy and a cancelled birthday party is bound to put a smile on your face anytime of your day. I have to admit that at first I really didn’t want to read it but when I got it, I felt proud of myself for choosing such a good book, and i hope others do too!
My Parents Cancelled My Birthday is a brilliant book to read. Very enticing straight from the start flat chihuahuas in a pizza box how unbelievably amazing is that to be in a book. I swear that it does get a lot better afterwards it made me want to read more I’m not really a book sort of person but when I was reading to my dad at home i read about sixty pages of it just to finish it. I mostly read about six pages a night but this book made me want to not do that and get it finished already but I was very disappointed when I finished it because I did enjoy it quite a lot. I think that I’m going to leave it there before people start getting annoyed about how much I’m going on about it and before I start adding any spoilers. Spot on 10 out of 10 star rating.
This is my favourite book out of all of them because it has a good chapter 6 and overall it suits every one and Jo Simmons is a fantastic writer hopefully I’m not spoiling that much but I recommend it even people don’t like it I still will because it is amazing throughout

My Parents Cancelled My Birthday is a really nice easy read and very funny! The reason this book is one of my favourites is the way it is quite random and really crazy things happen: a chihuahua gets flattened by a pig, and the pig gets painted like a zebra… see? I would recommend this book to children who like crazy, funny but mysterious stories in places!
