2018 Book Award Shortlist

Jake Atlas and the Tomb of the Emerald Snake by Rob Lloyd Jones

About the Book:

When Jake’s parents vanish, Jake and his sister team up with shady tomb robbers to find them in the Egyptian desert in this riveting
page-turning adventure by award-winning author Rob Lloyd Jones. The Atlas family is in trouble: Jake hides an addiction to stealing; his twin sister, Pan, has to conceal her genius, for fear of bullies. The siblings can’t stop fighting – with each other and with their parents, stuffy professors of Ancient History. But Jake’s and Pan’s lives take a dramatic turn the day they discover the truth about their boring mum and dad. When the family go to Cairo on holiday, and Jake and Pan’s parents mysteriously vanish, it’s up to the twins to find them. They team up with shady tomb robbers, master high-tech gadgets and locate a lost tomb in this story of a family that finds itself in the deserts of Egypt.

Published by Walker Books

About the Author:

Rob Lloyd Jones never wanted to be a writer when he grew up – he wanted to be Indiana Jones. So he studied Egyptology and archaeology, and went on expeditions to strange places. But all he found were interesting stories, so he decided to write them down. Jake Atlas and the Tomb of the Emerald Snake is his third novel, although he’s written more than thirty other books for children, including historical non-fiction and adaptations of such classics as Jekyll and Hyde. Rob lives in East Sussex with his wife and two young sons.

It is a great book and I really enjoyed it, there is a lot of adventures in the book and I would recommend it to anyone who likes Egypt but I wouldn’t give any spoilers to the people who might like some .

Jake Atlas and The Tomb of the Emerald Snake is a really powerful book it puts an image in your head and is in much detail. I wouldn’t say it is the best book ever, Podkin One-Ear is, but this book is quite a good book. Jake goes on an adventure he is a high tech treasure hunter. This book is still a stunner.

Jake Atlas has to be one of my favourite books that I have ever read. It is filled with a variety of adventures. This adventure story tells you about Jake’s skills and how he ends up using them wisely to get him out of trouble. Lots of events occur in this perfect book that makes the reader engrossed into it. Rob Lloyd Jones has well-worded Jake Atlas and it makes you imagine every event and scene in your head. This marvellous book is suitable for people from the age of 8. If you are interested in adventure, ancient Egypt or just even want a book to read, this book is certainly for you. Rob Lloyd Jones deserves a massive round of applause for the time and effort put into this extraordinary book. 10/10

Wow Jake Atlas was amazing, I couldn’t put the book down! The book was amazing because it was a matter of life and death. I like the way the writer made the book it was like you were actually in there helping Pan and Jake on their fascinating adventure. My favourite part was the ending because it is a cliff hanger. I can’t wait for the next book to come out and read the next adventure. It is an adventure book that only children over six will enjoy, because it is too big and there are big words, loads of explosions and blood (not actual!)

Jake Atlas has got to be my favourite book. Each chapter is full of jaw dropping, intriguing moments that keep drawing me in and making me want to read on. As well as this, it is easy to picture the story in my imagination and the adventures are easy to follow. Jake has inspired readers to use their talents for a good reason and to do what they do best. I would recommend this book to anybody who is interested in Ancient Egypt, treasure hunting or even just anybody prepared for a world of endless adventures.

I LOVED this book. I loved how it was mysterious but adventurous at the same time. Jake isn’t a great role model or well behaved kid as he steals and has this instinct which makes him do crazy things but when he starts treasure hunting, his problem becomes a skill and it helps him get out of some tricky situations. I think that Rob Lloyd Jones is an incredible author and I think he deserves lots of applause.

‘Jake Atlas’ is one off the best mystery books I have read in my in a while. The blurb gives a great background to Jake. All the characters have a great description on their looks and personalities. If this book was in a shop I would buy it. I would give this book 10/10. i would recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure and mystery. The adventure they go on is truly amazing.

I thought Jake Atlas was amazing. It surprised me a lot and I loved how there was a cliff hanger at the end of every chapter. I recommend this to everyone and make sure you give it a chance because trust me it’s worth it! Near the end of the book I almost cried because I got fooled by miss snake lady about Jake’s mum and dad being murdered. I also loved that every character had a completely different personality. 10/10!

I thought this book was really adventurous and exciting. At some points, it was nerve-wracking and I felt scared for Jake and Pan. I liked the part when they get to the first tomb because it raises lots of questions that I want to find the answer to – who were the other hunters? Were they dangerous? Can Kit be trusted? Every chapter ended on a near-death experience which made me want to carry on. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes stories that grip you.

when I started reading this book I didn’t like it that much,so I thought that I was going to pick a different book. I carried on with it and it started getting more and more exciting as I got further into it. There is so much description like when the blood was dripping from the palm of jake’s hand. my favourite character is jake the really cheeky and naughty little boy. This this is the best book I have ever read,i would recommend it to everyone who picks it up.

My favourite character is the technological genius Sami who invented all the cool gadgets Jake and his sister Pan use. Some of the twists in this book are so good: they don’t totally change the book but they are very good. I also think it would make an amazing film.

This is a great action book but it’s also funny. The main character, Jake, is a bit cheeky and naughty but by the end of the book, he uses his bad streak to do good things and he starts to feel good about himself. The family always seem to argue but as the story goes on, the characters start getting on better which is a clever part of the book. I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it.

Jake doesn’t start off as the best role model but he proved himself time and again as the story unfolded. This is a fast paced and exciting adventure that kept me hooked. The gadgets and technology that Jake gets his hands on puts a different twist on an Indiana Jones like adventure fit for the 21st Century – it would definiately make a great film.
